National Commemoration of the 60th Anniversary  of the commencement of the Korean War

A commemorative service marking the 60th anniversary of the start of the Korean War will be held at the National Korean War Memorial in ANZAC Parade Canberra on Saturday, 23rd October 2010 at 11:00 am. All Korean War Veterans, widows and family members are welcome to attend the Commemorative Service.

If the Committee has recorded names in advance then the Veterans, widows and a representative of the MIA families will receive an invitation from DVA to the Commemorative Service.

Please give your name to the Office (6285 1931) if you are a veteran or widow and the Committee will be informed. Speak to others and have them report their names as well.

Australia had troops in Korea until 1957, so the youngest veteran would probably be at least 73, with most in their 80s

Members of the Sub-branch are asked to make themselves available to assist with guiding and helping to seat frail persons attending the ceremony.

DVA will be providing some subsidy for the ceremony and for a dinner in the evening.

Details of the dinner will be provided soon, but if you think you would attend advise the office when recording your name.

TREE PLANTING CEREMONY AT NATIONAL ARBORETUM

The Chief Minister of the ACT has invited the RSL to plant Lone Pine seedlings in a dedicated section of the National Arboretum in a ceremony to be held on Friday, 12 November 2010 at approximately 1300 hours.  At this stage the final number of trees is yet to be determined but will be in the vicinity of 120 -140 trees.

The invitation has been extended by the RSL to include involvement of other ESOs in this ceremonial tree-planting event.

When the actual number of participants is known by the ACT Branch, Sub-Branches will be advised of the number of participants allocated to them.  This calculation will be a based on membership numbers.

In the interim, Sub-Branches are requested to canvass their members seeking Expressions of Interest in participating in this event.  However the following points must be made abundantly clear to all intending participants:

  • The site for the plantings on Dairy Farmers Hill is steeply sloping and the ground is broken and uneven.
  • Volunteers must be able to negotiate the sloping site and be able to kneel down to plant the seedlings in prepared holes.  I
  • Persons in wheelchairs or using walking frames will not be able to participate in the planting due to high risks involved

Members wishing to express their interest should contact the office (6285 1931)by not later than 26 October 2010.
